Trompé l'oeil is French for 'trick the eye'. The painting, when viewed from the right place, should deceive the viewer into thinking that a new element has been introduced into the space.

The main benefits of trompé l'oeil and murals are that they can create an illusion of a space that could not normally exist or would defy the laws of nature. Commonly used to enlarge an area or to look out of a room into another area, they can also intrude into an area via the use of shelving or hanging objects.
